In his Introduction to Darkness at Noon, Michael Scammell writes that the novel contains “themes of martyrdom and absolution,” and that Rubashov’s confession is “prompted by a deeper sense of guilt than simply disloyalty to the party” (xi). How does Rubashov justify what he has done in defense of the totalitarian regime and how is that defense contradictory?

Length: 1800 words maximum. Using a 12 point font, double-spaced, you should get about 300 words per page (save for the first, because of the opening titles). Ideally, your essay will end on the sixth page. Anything over six pages will not be regarded. (The Work Cited can be put on that sixth page, if there is room—save paper! Otherwise, it can sit on the seventh page.) In adhering to normal essay format, you should make clear your thesis near the beginning of the paper. Please observe format: it is considered in your grade. You must otherwise follow the MLA (7th edition). Why all this? Part of any essay is the exercise of self-editing. Parameters force you to be judicious. Aim for concision. Do not use secondary sources, such as articles on these books.

The title can be “A Contradiction of the Collective and the Individual”

I’d like the focus to be on collective vs the individual. You can discuss how the protagonist justifies himself because believes in logical thinking (the Party logic) and how their logic is contradictory. (and how he gradually starts to realize the logic is flawed). He justifies himself because he is self righteous and has a sense of superiority, as shown through interactions with various characters. Which he then realizes he isn’t through his time in jail. And how he also justifies himself because he believes the party is apart of history, but he soon realizes that it doesn’t work that way.
