Discussion 1

Initially, the concept of leadership focused on an individual who organized a group of people to achieve a goal. Today, however, leadership is depicted in a different way. The field focuses not only on an individual leader, but also on members, supervisors, and followers representing a spectrum of diversity. During the evolution of leadership, several theories, models, and perspectives have emerged. As a human and social services professional, it is important to consider how different theories, models, and perspectives of leadership might be used to achieve professional and societal goals.

To prepare:

  • Consider the issue you selected for your Capstone Project. Select a leadership theory, model, or perspective and think about how it might be applied to your issue.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post a brief description of your professional or societal issue and the leadership theory, model, or perspective you selected. Then, explain why you chose that theory, model, or perspective, and explain how it might be applied to your issue. Be specific, and use processes of that theory, model, or perspective to illustrate your point.

Discussion 2 Leadership

Leaders believe in creating change out of a spirit of community, building a collaborative vision through dialogue, and developing a vision that integrates personal and professional beliefs.

The concepts of leadership, advocacy, and change are intertwined. Leaders are expected to be innovators, risk takers, and strategic thinkers. They also need to be advocates at the local, state, and national levels, and they need to motivate and lead members, followers, and communities to do the same. Advocacy enables, empowers, and encourages members to become involved in change.

To prepare:

  • Think about different leadership, change, and advocacy perspectives as they relate to the agency you selected for your Capstone Project.

Post a brief description of your agency. Describe at least three distinctions in how the leadership perspective might differ from either the change or advocacy perspectives as they relate to your agency. Explain the implications of these differences on the actions you might take and on the potential results as they relate to the agency. Be specific, and provide examples to illustrate your points.

Module 01 Art Appreciation Test Out

Through every period in history, art has evolved. There are various factors that influence this – what is going on in the world at any given moment, the culture, and social implications can all play a role in this evolution. What is now considered the Modern Art period was relatively unknown in America on a public level until the Armory Show of 1913 when Europe’s greatest living artists displayed their work overseas for the first time collectively. Immediately, American artists were taken aback by how advanced this artwork was, while the majority of the estimated 75,000 people in attendance were shocked and even appalled by what they were witnessing.

The Armory Show is a good example of how art is created, shared, and experienced on a global scale.

Presentation Content

  1.    Planning a Presentation learning activity.

Imagine you work for a major, nationwide accounting firm. Your firm has many openings and wants to recruit the most qualified accounting students. You’ve been asked to help recruit talent at several local universities. You begin the recruiting process with many of these accounting students via Facebook and LinkedIn. Once you have identified high-potential recruits, you organize several social events to get to know them better. You also hold several informative sessions about what it’s like to work at your firm and what career paths are available. Because so many other firms are competing for the top recruits, the presentation about opportunities at your firm is critical. You want to make sure that your presentation is organized for maximum impact.

Remember that your target audience consists of potential employees who just graduated college, so you should tailor your presentation to appeal to topics that will be of interest to these recruits.

    In your presentation:
    • Introduce the organization (history, specific business focus, background, etc.).
    • Present the various career opportunities available within the organization.
    • Provide examples of various ways to advance within the organization.
    • Specify benefits provided by the organization that can attract recruits who just graduated college (continued education, professional development, employee training, tuition assistance, etc.).
    • Demonstrate how the organization has been adopting technology and training employees.

Prepare a 10-15 minute PowerPoint presentation with approximately 10 slides.

Assignment 8

Most human and social services professionals come into their professions to make a difference. Doing so at the societal level is both a challenge and an opportunity. Being a successful social change agent, leader, and advocate requires both skill and commitment. To accomplish large-scale change to address societal issues as part of the technical aspects of a strategic plan, human and social services professionals need to address indicators of success and performance targets.

To prepare:

  • Think about how you might apply the theories and processes of change, leadership, and advocacy when implementing a strategic plan that addresses indicators of success and performance targets.

The Assignment (2–3 pages):

  • Describe leading indicators of success. To determine whether the agency, organization, or community will benefit from the strategic plan, you must identify those things which would serve as indicators of success. These indicators must be observable, measurable, and quantifiable in some way.
    • Identify four indicators that would signify success with regard to the strategic plan.
    • Discuss specifically how you would measure each indicator.
  • Identify performance targets. Performance targets represent the level at which you would like to observe performance on each indicator. They represent the desired level of performance. For each performance indicator that you have identified, specify the targeted level of performance.
