Valencia College Uniform Crime Rate Discussion
Visit the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s web site for the uniform crime reports (UCR) at FBI Uniform Crime Report (Links to an external site.). Under publications, click on “Crime in the United States” and then click on 2015. Next, click on the “Caution Against Ranking” link and review the variables that can affect crime reporting. After that, go back to the previous screen and click on “Go to Offense Tables” and then click on Tables 1 and 6. Table 1 presents crime rates for the entire United States. Table 6 presents crime data for selected cities and crime rates for selected metropolitan areas. Select a city (do not select Abilene, TX) and review the Part I crime for that city. Based on what you know about the variables affecting crime, what variables might need to be taken into account when assessing crime for the city you selected? Discuss at least three variables.
Next, click on the Crime Rate Calculator(1).xlsx to calculate the crime rate for your city.

Table 6 in the UCR only provides the crime rate for your city’s metropolitan area and not for the city itself. To learn the city’s actual crime rate, you will need to input the city’s crime data into the crime rate calculator. The data (population, violent crime, murder, etc.) will be entered into the blue cells. The crime rate will appear in the yellow cells.
Remember, the crime rate is reported as crime/100,000 residents. Compare the crime rate for your city with the national crime rates for each of the eight Part 1 crimes. Describe any differences that you consider noteworthy.
Your response should be at least 300 words in length.
