The humanities study the diversity of human creativity and expression from ancient times to the present, full of both beauty and suffering. Every culture has its own struggles and conflicts. Art, in the most general sense as defined earlier in our course, comes from the human need to create beauty from both the joys of life and the pain.

Pick an artwork or artifact from one of the ancient cultures we have studied this semester (make sure it fits into our general time frame – anything from prehistory up to 1450 CE/AD. What does the work tell us about the culture from which it came? How did this work benefit the culture from which it came? Research the art work or artifact and write an analysis based on its cultural value. Here are some ideas to help you get started – you do not need to cover all the items listed except where indicated:

• The work can be a literary or philosophical work, a cultural artifact, or a specific technological advancement.
• Describe the work or artifact in detail – find at least one source to help you analyze the work. (Required – 10 points.)
• Historical/Cultural Context: What does the work or artifact tell us about the culture from which it came? What role did it play in the culture in which it was created? Explain the historical context. What is the general time period of the work and what does it tell us about the historical period from which it came? (Required – 10 points.)
• Explain the original religious, practical, and/or spiritual value of the work during the time it was created. You may also be able to relate these topics to the religious, practical, and/or spiritual value of the work or artifact for our present time.
• How did the work help this culture deal with human conflict or suffering? How did it contribute to the success of this culture?

Sources (required 50 points – 10 points per source):

• Must support your views and observations with research. Demonstrate your understanding of readings and research by citing specific information. Personal views must also be supported with specific information from the readings. Include page numbers or in-text citations for all information!
• Use quality scholarly sources and websites: links to Rice Library databases for the humanities are included in the Blackboard menu tabs under “Web Resources.”
• Use at least 5 sources for this assignment. Your textbook is optional but recommended for easy access and counts as one source.
• MLA format is recommended: in-text citations with a works cited at the end.
