Choose and respond to ONE of the questions below:

1) Write a brief (1-2 page), informal essay comparing your reactions to the poem you like the most and the poem you like the least from the “Family” album (p813-821). Why and how do those poems elicit the responses they do from you? What role do tone and theme play here? What role is played by your own, personal ideas and experiences of/about family?

2) Choose one poem from the assigned reading in which syntax(the order of words in a sentence) or the placement of words on the page seems especially key to the poem’s overall effect and meaning. Write a short essay (1-2 pages) explaining how and why considering word order, in either or both of these senses (syntax and appearance on the page) might change or deepen your understanding of the poem
