The authors of this article emphasize the importance of the United States to take advantage of the rise of pivotal powers such as China, India, Russia, EU, and Japan. The authors see this as an opportunity for the United States to put in place strategies to collaborate with these “pivotal powers.” This strategy consists of four elements: compounding American strengths, constructing close relationships with pivotal powers, collaborating with these powers to solve global problems, and covering our bets. They explain that some of these countries are forming organizations and alliances on their own and state that the United States should want these “pivotal powers” on their team instead of on someone else’s. “There is only one right way to approach pivotal powers in the twenty-first century—to draw them near (Hachigian & Sutphen, 2008).” The authors argue that the United States possesses many threats like technology, terrorist, and environmental problems can only be solved by “order-seeking nation-states.” I agree with some of the ideas that the author present in this article. Most of the challenges that she mentions in this article I feel are important concerns. My concern is the effect globalization will have on the US economy. Although I like the idea of involving multiple nations for trade, I believe it is much harder to do without having a contention or having one nation benefit more or less and feeling cheated. The authors also mentioned that in order to promote security around the world, the United States must follow the same international laws as other countries. This hasn’t been the case as of lately with the United States. Lastly, I don’t agree when they think that because the United States doesn’t participate in topics like climate change have given other countries a free pass to limit their emissions.
