Option #1

Complete two sets of ethnographic observations at a public location. Each observation should last at least 30 minutes and should be completed in the same location. [See part 1 and 2 of the ‘Dramaturg in Everyday Life’ assignment details as a guide for your observations and to jot down some ‘field notes’ that will be useful to you as your write up your analysis.] Your essay should be a sociological analysis of your observations. Consider how you might engage two or more of the course topics to frame your analysis, and which corresponding concepts can you apply to your observations.

Option #2

Watch one of the following documentaries which relate to our most recent course topics. Your essay should be an analytical and/or critical reflection essay of the documentary. You should incorporate a discussion of at least two course topics in your reflection as you reflect on the sociological relevance of the documentary.

Option #3

Consider how you might apply a layer of sociological analysis to a project or essay that you are completing for another class. How might you frame your project within two or more sociological topics, and apply relevant concepts in ways that bring a new layer of insight to a project you are already working on?

Option #4

How can you engage the sociological topics we have explored in a creative way? For example, you may be interested in the sociology of families and family dynamics, particularly as they intersect with gender relations. To communicate some aspect of how these topics intersect, you might compose a song or song lyrics, produce a photo series, construct a collage, etc. Your essay will include at least 1.5 pages of text in which you discuss the sociological relevance of your creative production. [You will have to drop off the final project to my office on Tuesday 4/30 or Wednesday 5/1.]

Regardless of the assignment option you select, you will be required to:

1. Analytically engage two or more sociological topics that we have covered in the course of the semester [for example, topic 1: gender and sexuality; topic 2: deviance]. I’d encourage you to choose a topic besides ‘presentation of self’ and the topic you used for the film analysis.
2. Apply relevant concepts from each of the major topics.
3. Write at least three full pages (12-point font, Times New Roman, 1” margins)
4. Lead a relevant sociological discussion which:
   – Explains what it means to think sociologically about your selected topics.
   – Discuss how these major topics connect one another in your analysis.
   – Applies several related concepts in your analysis in ways that further our sociological understanding of your selected topics.

Please note that while the essay is fairly short, your writing should be analytically dense and clearly communicate your sociological ideas. Your overall goal is to convince me that you are thinking sociologically by engaging and applying sociological topics and concepts.
