Writing Assignment 3: Report on a cultural event (3-4 pages) 8 points

Several intercultural events are organized by a variety of cultural groups in Houston or in the region/area you live. Watch the news and read the daily newspapers or local magazines to get to know what is going on in your community. Select one that you would like to write on. Attend the event, participate, observe, interact with people attending and talk to organizers to understand the significance of the event and the intercultural knowledge and understanding it can provide to those attending. Observe the communication-culture interrelationships. Try to analyze the event by describing and assessing the impact of cultural patterns, perceptions, verbal codes, nonverbal codes, social episodes and relationship rules on the outcome of this encounter. Try also to make an assessment of the impact on ethnocentrism, stereotyping, racism, prejudice and/or any type of items in the BASIC Scale (chapter 3) that either facilitate or hinder intercultural competence in this event.
